Summary

Andrew Hickey hosts the highly acclaimed podcast A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs. Using a single song as the centerpiece for each episode, Hickey is attempting to chart the history of rock from the beginnings of amplified guitars to modern music, with the 500th episode to draw from the year 1999. In addition to the podcast, Hickey has published more than twenty books on various subjects, ranging from novels about the occult to reference books on the 1960s series, ‘Doctor Who.’ ------- Thank you to the sponsors that fuel our podcast and our team: House of Macadamias https://www.houseofmacadamias.com/tetra Get a free box of Dry Roasted Namibian Sea Salt Macadamias + 20% off Your Order With Code TETRA Use code TETRA for 20% off at checkout. ------- LMNT Electrolytes  https://drinklmnt.com/tetra Get a free LMNT Sample Pack with your order.

Tetragrammaton I've been listening to your voice for so long, so often.

0:28.1

I had no idea what image to put to it.

0:30.6

So I'm happy to see a friendly, a friendly visage.

0:34.7

It's funny, actually, one previous time I did a video call with a producer who'd been listening to the podcast and wanted to do a TV series based on it.

0:42.6

And he said, the third thing that said was, I never realized you had a Rick Rubin beard.

0:46.5

Ah, nice.

0:49.0

Did anything become of that project?

0:51.4

Well, it's on the back burner while other things happen.

0:53.9

So, you know,

0:54.6

so no. Cool. Oh, good to know because I feel like that's, it's a smart idea, and I hope that it

1:00.2

happens. Yeah. How many years into the series are you now? It's coming up to five years. It's about

1:07.2

four years and eight months, something like that. I started in October 2018, actually on my 40th birthday.

1:13.5

And the original plan was it would finish on my 50th birthday, doing well a week.

1:18.1

But then the episode's got bigger, and so that's not happening.

1:22.5

So from its inception, you viewed it as a 10-year project.

1:27.4

Yeah. Well, it's 500 songs. The original plan was to do an

1:31.3

episode a week, but then as the episodes have got longer and as I've had various live things in the way,

1:38.0

you know, I started this pre-COVID and pre-the entirety of the last few years. So the original plan was to do an episode a week,

1:45.8

get it done in 10 years,

1:47.0

but as it is,

1:47.6

it's going to end up taking more like 20, I think.
