Summary

Vladimir Putin doesn’t want Russian citizens to know the truth about what he’s doing in Ukraine, and Americans are finding creative ways to get donations into the hands of Ukrainian civilians and small business owners. The anchor of CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360” and a correspondent for “60 Minutes,” Anderson Cooper, joins Stephen live from Lviv, Ukraine where he is covering Russia’s invasion and is amazed by the bravery of the Ukrainian people. Next, two-time Tony Award winner Sutton Foster returns to The Late Show to share stories about working with her “The Music Man” co-star Hugh Jackman, and to give Stephen something special she made by hand in her dressing room. Catch Sutton in “The Music Man” at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway and check out her new book, “Hooked: How Crafting Saved My Life,” available everywhere now. Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome. Welcome, one and all. To the late show, I'm your host, Stephen Colbert. We are.

0:11.0

We're almost two weeks into the Russian invasion of Ukraine. And the deeper you dig into what Russia is doing over there, the worse it gets.

0:23.0

It's like a nesting doll of bad. So far, more than 1.5 million Ukrainian refugees have fled the country.

0:30.0

It would be more, but Russia refuses to abide by their own announced ceasefires and safe corridors to allow civilians to escape repeatedly over the weekend.

0:39.0

Russian troops continued to pummel cities with rockets even after the announcement of corridors. It's like Putin's competing in the evil Olympics against himself.

0:50.0

He's Russian. You know he's juicing. Now Putin, Putin says he's offering humanitarian corridors for real this time, but only for Ukrainians to flee to Russia.

1:03.0

Well, that's not helpful. That's like having a safety sign that says, in case of fire, jump into a pit of snakes.

1:11.0

It turns out that Ukrainian resistance has been much fiercer than Putin ever dreamed. So instead of trying to achieve...

1:20.0

Absolutely.

1:27.0

So instead of trying to achieve a military victory, the Russians are attacking civilian infrastructure in an attempt to make Ukrainians survive with electricity, water, food, medical help, and means of subsistence in what many are calling an effort to break Ukrainian morale.

1:45.0

I didn't put in seeing how tough these Ukrainians are this weekend. A man and a woman who are serving together in the resistance took a break from fighting to get married on the front lines.

1:58.0

It's like a wedding in Texas, but with slightly fewer guns. Although, although I must say, I must say, huge faux pas. Everyone knows you're not supposed to wear the same color camo as the bride.

2:11.0

Where is she? Where is she?

2:15.0

I'll tell you what, I will never complain about a destination wedding again.

2:20.0

Russia has been hit with a series of crippling sanctions, and it looks like there's more to come because the U.S. and its European allies are now discussing banning imports of Russian oil.

2:30.0

Take that, Putin. We're not going to buy our gas from a war criminal. We're going to buy it from the good guys. Saudi Arabia.

2:39.0

But it's going to cost. Since the invasion, oil prices have skyrocketed.

2:44.0

Today, the average gas price in America hit an all-time record high of over $4 per gallon.

2:50.0

Okay, that's things, but a clean conscience is worth a buck or two.

2:55.0

I'm willing to pay...

3:01.0

It's important.

3:04.0

I'm willing to pay $4 a gallon. I'll pay $15 a gallon, because I drive a Tesla.
