It'll just make that trip more horrible and dangerous.

First up, though. Last night, on the streets of Paris, people were singing hymns.

Notre Dame, the iconic cathedral that has stood over the city for eight and a half centuries, was a blaze.

Firefighters managed to save the Gothic building's main stone structure, including its two towers,

but the spire and much of the roof collapsed. The cause is not yet known.

So, President Emmanuel Macron, addressed the nation from the scene shortly before midnight.

We will rebuild this cathedral together, he said, and it is undoubtedly part of French destiny.

Mr. Macron had been due to give a very different speech, one he'd hoped would unite France and help him reconnect with people there.

Well, I was in the office waiting to watch President Macron, who was due to give an address at 8pm on French national television.
