Now is always a good time to talk about anxiety. Although we’re feeling okay presently, we know that the wonderful adventure of parenthood will also come with many challenges that will test our relationship with ourselves and one another.
Enter Dr. Ellen Vora.
Dr. Vora is a holistic psychiatrist, acupuncturist, and yoga teacher. She takes a functional medicine approach to mental health—considering the whole person and addressing imbalance at the root. Dr. Vora received her B.A. from Yale University and her M.D. from Columbia University, and she is board-certified in psychiatry and integrative holistic medicine.
More than 40 million Americans suffer from anxiety in any given year, a number that has only increased as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. We’ve long thought of anxiety as a “neck up” problem—a problem of brain chemistry and psychology, but now in The ANATOMY OF ANXIETY: Understanding and Overcoming the Body's Fear Response, acclaimed psychiatrist Dr. Ellen Vora offers nothing less than a paradigm shift in the way we understand anxiety and mental health. Vora suggests that the symptoms of anxiety are frequently the result of physical imbalance—that is, anxiety is a whole-body condition, not simply a brain condition. In the same way that Bessel van der Kolk’s bestselling The Body Keeps Score changed how we understand trauma, The Anatomy of Anxiety will transform our understanding of anxiety.
The good news is that this body-based anxiety is treatable—simple solutions include: getting our circadian rhythm back on track; limiting caffeine, and becoming aware of blood sugar and its contribution to “hanxiety.”
