Summary

In this sermon on Romans 11:1–36 titled An Introduction to Romans 11,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones urges the listener to lay aside prejudices and traditions and to come to God’s word in an attitude of reverence. All Scripture is the very word of God. The major themes of this chapter are salvation, faith, and the people of Israel. Dr. Lloyd-Jones addresses questions such as what is the relation between Jew and Gentile, what is the future of the Jewish people, and what does it mean to be justified by faith? All these questions have immense significance for the Christian life and the life of the church. Christianity and theology is not simply about abstract intellectual ideas but it is about knowing God.

0:00.0	Well, now, my friends, as we resume these Friday night meetings, most of you, I'm sure,
0:05.5	will remember that we've reached this stage in our study of this epistle to the Romans,
0:12.1	which brings us to a consideration of the 11th chapter, which we read together just now.
0:19.0	We finished at the end of chapter 10 at the end of May, and so we find ourselves
0:24.9	beginning this 11th chapter. And incidentally, I perhaps ought to have announced that God
0:30.1	willing, these meetings will go on regularly Friday by Friday until just before Christmas.
0:37.2	We'll make an announcement with regard to when exactly
0:40.3	there will be a break for Christmas nearer the time. Well, now, this you will all realize,
0:48.0	and especially those of you, students of the Bible, is one of the great and notable chapters in the whole of the Bible.
0:57.0	I know that I have a tendency to say that about every chapter, and in a sense, of course,
1:02.6	it is true.
1:04.5	Incidentally, let me say this, and giving my own experience, what makes me say that sort of thing
1:10.3	is this. There are certain
1:12.2	chapters which strike one and stand out in one's estimate immediately, merely from a general
1:19.9	reading of the Bible, certain great outstanding chapters. I think we'd all agree that that's
1:25.8	true of chapter eight of this epistle to the Romans.
1:29.3	And that's very largely a literary matter. But there are other chapters, which you recognize,
1:38.2	of course, as being of great importance because they're part of the scripture, but which
1:43.6	you'd never some or another
1:45.7	realized was so outstanding until you begin to study them in detail.
1:52.1	And then you're amazed not only at the wealth which is to be found in them, but equally
1:57.9	amazed at the fact that you'd never realized it before.
