Summary

Recently a documentary series entitled "An Inconvenient Faith" appeared on YouTube, produced by Robert Reynolds and Jim Bennett (among others). The documentary seeks to promote progressive Mormonism within LDS church membership. The documentary is groundbreaking in the sense that it includes both Ex-Mormons (e.g. Jeremy Runnells, Sandra Tanner, John Dehlin, Bill Reel) and faithful Mormon scholars (e.g. Richard Bushman, Terryl & Fiona Givens, Patrick Mason). The series has also received a considerable amount of excitement and critique on the Internet.

Please join Mormon Stories for a livestream as a panel (John Dehlin, Bishop Beau Oyler, Julie Hanks, and Jana Spangler) react to the documentary. We welcome your participation as well!

Hello, everyone and welcome to another edition of Mormon Stories podcast. I am your host for today,

0:04.5

John DeLinn. It is September 4th, 2025. And today we are here to review a new Mormon-themed

0:13.5

documentary that has made big waves in the faithful Mormon world, the progressive Mormon world, and even the ex-Mormon world.

0:23.0

It's a documentary called An Inconvenient Faith.

0:27.2

It was released only to YouTube.

0:30.1

And it's a documentary made primarily by my dear friend Robert Reynolds, who I'll talk about in a

0:36.4

minute.

0:36.9

But it's basically, if I had to describe it, it's a documentary that covers like nine topics and its goal is to help encourage Mormons who are questioning their faith, Lattery Saints who are questioning their faith, to consider what I would call progressive or nuanced Mormonism as a way to possibly stay engaged in or active in the church instead of thinking you have to either be Orthodox and orthoprax or basically leave and become ex-Morman.

1:12.2

And without, you know, give it away any spoilers, like what I think is game changing about

1:18.8

this documentary is that it is the first known piece of media that I've ever seen

1:27.2

created by relatively faithful, engaged Mormons,

1:31.7

that includes and shows respect for ex-Morman or critical voices.

1:37.3

So we're talking about a documentary that has Jeremy Runnels, Sandra Tanner, Bill Reel, myself, and other critics of the church.

1:47.9

And it also has Richard Bushman, Terrell Givens, Fiona Givens, Patrick Mason, and lots of other faithful voices.

1:55.8

It's got David Baccavoy.

1:56.9

Anyway, I would say like 80% of the people there have been on Mormon stories at one point or another as well.

2:02.6

But anyway, it's been reviewed a few times now.

2:06.2

Stephen Pynaker covered it on Mormon Book Review.

2:09.1

Patrick Mason and Maxine were on that along with Jana.

2:12.2

Radio Free Mormon and Bill Reel covered it.

2:14.4

I was on that one.

2:15.3

There were some fun sparks between me and RFM and Bill
