One of my favourite things about this podcast is when it acts as an open door for listeners

new to reading Golden Age detective fiction. Everyone arrives here with different levels

of knowledge and experience in the genre, and if I'm doing this right, they get to step

over the threshold and discover writers and stories that are new to them. Some of these

encounters are more common than others, although I love hearing about them all. Plenty of people

over the years I've been doing this have told me that they'd never strayed beyond Agatha

Christie's Poirot books before hearing She Done It, and were now devouring the adventures

of Tommy and Toppins, Miss Marple, Mr. Satisfight and the rest.

Others are a little more rarefied. I treasure the email from a Theologian who was extremely

familiar with Dorothy L. Sayers' work in that field, but only began reading her Peter Wimsey

stories after hearing one of my episodes. Compared to Agatha Christie, every author is

less well-known, and I'm always delighted to find out that someone has, because of this

show, investigated and then fallen in love with the work of a writer like Nio Marsh or

ECR Lorac, who wrote dozens of books that they can now enjoy.
