His eyes were suddenly arrested by the most hideous figure than it ever appeared to mortal eyes.

It had the general form of a human being, but of more than mortal size. It had one, if not two, cloven feet.

Its hands were like bears' claws, but a nation's sight more frightful.

Its mouth was enormously large, its eyes shone with a green flame,

its ears pricked up like those of Midas,

and it had a long tail with a spear point,

which it carried sometimes horizontally,

sometimes erect, sometimes in a sort of graceful curvature,

and sometimes lashing furiously about, according as the occasion demanded.

Besides all this, it carried in its mouth a ball of fire the size of a large coconut

and an enormous roll of brimstone in each hand.

They claim that far and eyes would just be treated a slight different
