Welcome to the Dividend Cafe, weekly market commentary focused on dividends in your portfolio

0:06.5

and dividends in your understanding of economic life. Well, hello and welcome to a very special

0:14.7

dividend cafe live from Washington, D.C., where I will actually leave here in a few hours, but have been here

0:23.3

since Tuesday. And I'm going to be talking a bit more in the Monday Dividing Cafe about some

0:28.6

of the meetings this week that I can talk about. It's been a very constructive week for me,

0:34.4

and I'm excited to share some things. But I'll let that wait until Monday's Dividing

0:39.6

Cafe. The priority I have today, when I say Special Dividedin Cafe, is that we are sitting here right now

0:45.4

It is certainly a moment that will be in the history books.

And there's a particular market focus I want to have today in Dividendon Cafe.

1:12.3

When people think about that COVID moment and the onset of what became a COVID period, there are a lot of ways you could go

1:18.2

with this topic. First of all, it didn't last just two or three weeks in March. It ended up in

1:22.6

some ways lasting a couple of years, for some people anyways. But the cultural aspects, the social aspects,

1:30.9

what it meant to our social cohesion as a society, the political ramifications, there's

1:35.7

longer term and peripheral dynamics around the COVID moment that are actually not the subject

1:41.3

to Dividend Cafe today, although I guess I would be lying if I

1:44.5

didn't tell you, I do have pretty strong opinions on a lot of that. I think about that a lot.

1:50.0

And I think that there was a sense in which COVID exacerbated a lot of tensions in society,

1:56.7

not united despite tensions in society. It was uniquely traumatic event in that regard that a lot of

2:05.4

times traumas in our society serve as a unifying force. And this was very much quite the opposite.

2:12.3

But what I want to talk about in David Cafe today is a very specific period in, or we're going to start
