Summary

Amy Sherald painted the official portrait of Michelle Obama that’s hanging in the National Portrait Gallery but there’s an awesome story around how she got that commission and the artistic decisions she made in making that painting. 0:53.8	And I was like, mom, that's what Amy Cheryl does. And she's like, I don't like the color of Michelle Obama's skin. And I was like, mom, that's what Amy Cheryl does.
0:56.8	And she's like, I don't like it.

0:59.9	A lot of, I'll say a lot of black people didn't.

1:03.0	So take me back to now I'm conceiving this.
1:07.4	And I'm going to go with my skin choice.
1:10.7	That's why she chose me. I didn't force that on her. She knew that you were going to give her that gray, black. Absolutely. That's why I... Did you talk about that choice specifically? Yeah, it wasn't even a real conversation. It was like, I like your work and I want you to be the one to paint me.
1:28.6	And I'm like, well, this is how I paint. She's like, that's what we want. They chose us for a reason.
1:32.9	They chose us because there's like this break in history right now. Yes. And everybody needs to know this
1:38.7	happen. And these portraits have to be as special as the moment because they may not ever happen again.
1:44.9	I am so excited for this episode. I've been waiting to do this interview for a year and a half,
1:51.1	and finally it's here. My home girl, Amy Sherald, is a major league portrait painter who painted
1:58.2	the official portrait of the First Lady Michelle Obama. It's hanging in the
2:03.3	National Portrait Gallery right now. Before that commission, Amy was a big name in the art world,
