The day the paintings were unveiled. my mom called and she said,

I don't like the color of Michelle Obama's skin.

And I was like, mom, that's what Amy Sherrill does.

And she's like, I don't like it.

Yeah.

A lot of people did.

A lot of, I'll say a lot of black people didn't.

Right.

So take me back to now I'm conceiving this of black people didn't. Right. So, so take me back to you, now I'm

conceiving this and I'm going to go with my skin choice. That's why she chose me. I didn't

force that on her. She, she knew that you were going to give her that gray, black. Absolutely.

That's why I. Did you talk about that choice specifically? You, it wasn't even a real conversation. It was like, I like your work, and I want you to be the one to paint me. And I'm like, well, this is how I paint. She's like, that's what we want. They chose us for a reason. They chose us because there's like this break in history right now. Yes. And everybody needs to know this happen.

And these portraits have to be as special as the moment because they may not ever

happen again.
