Summary

The latest Barna Research Institute survey was recently released, and the Magnificent Three break down the results. Although the Barna definition of a “Bible-believing Christian” is a bit broader than ours, the poll results are still quite compelling. It appears the number of believers in fundamental Christian truths has significantly decreased in the past few decades, so the team considers the implications of that change and what factors may have contributed to it.    How can the Church keep its house in order—guarding the minds and souls of God’s sheep? And why is it important to believe the right things about God? Pull up a seat and join us!   We are offering you the opportunity to win a free copy of None Greater: The Undomesticated Attributes of God. Register!

I am Todd Pruitt, and I'm joined as always by Amy Bird and Carl Truman.

And we're so glad that you joined us today.

Of course, we are three people who keep our fingers on the pulse of American Christianity.

1:13.1

And so we were a little interested at just the latest depressing study released from the Barna Research Group.

1:24.3

Now, you can have quibbles with the Barna research at various times. Their definition of

1:30.9

what a Christian is is quite broad, shall we say? But this survey was interesting because it seems

1:42.5

to have as a starting point a relatively decent definition of a quote,

1:49.0

a Bible-believing Christian, someone who affirms, you know, the Trinity, just as a baseline of a very basic,

1:56.6

the Bible's God's word, the Trinity, Jesus died for sinners, et cetera.

2:01.4

And what they have found in their research is that a slim 51% majority of Americans believe in the most basic biblical attributes of God, down from 73%, they say, three decades ago.

2:21.7

So we are increasingly, it seems, as the columnist Ross Duthat has written in a recent book,

2:31.0

we are increasingly a nation of heretics.

2:35.6

And of course, the Church of Jesus Christ as the ground and pillar of the truth.

2:43.1

We have a rather large responsibility in this.

2:50.6

Let me just throw out a couple of things from this study. So, for instance,

2:56.2

Americans are more confident, this was interesting, Americans are more confident about the

3:00.8

existence of 6% contending that Satan is an influential spiritual being, yet almost half,
