I'm Kurt Anderson, and today in Studio 360's American icons, Monticello.

I'm probably one of the few people you'll ever meet who's actually jumped on Thomas

Jefferson's bed.

Lucian Truscott is a fifth generation grandson of Thomas Jefferson.

And back in the early 1950s, Monticello, which had been Jefferson's home, was not the

perfectly appointed tourist destination that it's become since. Lucian and his

brother pretty much had the run of the place. So we just took off like a shot and went up in the upstairs

bedrooms in the attic and out on the roof and dropped pebbles down on various tourists that

were wandering around.

When I was little, I used to go visit my great-grandmother and my great aunts in Charlottesville.
