Summary

America has defaulted to the 40-hour workweek for nearly 90 years. But why do US employees work more than any other industrialized nation? Is it the #LoveOfTheGrind…or something else? And, could less work and more vacation allow for the same level of productivity? We're joined by economist Daniel Hamermesh from the National Bureau of Economic Research to analyze some theories as well as possible solutions for shifting our approach to work. A few months ago, I was feeling very creatively stuck.

0:12.4

This is a problem because my job relies almost entirely on personal curiosity and the

0:18.9

generative act of collecting a lot of inspiration and information and then transforming it into

0:25.8

something interesting. And it felt like the engine powering my brain kept misfiring.

0:33.9

I was mentally foggy, like there were too many tabs open at once and the spinning beach ball

a little bit confused, I had not lost my f*** for the dramatic. But I knew there was

1:25.3

1:35.9

so desperate to get unstuck and to stop spinning my wheels. To summarize briefly, the exercise

1:42.4

asks you to identify a limiting belief that's causing you pain and then asks for follow-up questions.

1:48.6

Is it true? Can you absolutely know it's true? How do you react when you believe that thought?

1:55.1

And who would you be without that thought? Now, my limiting belief sent me down a rabbit hole

2:01.6

of unpacking deeply held borderline, puritanical ideas about the moral value of work ethic.

2:10.4

Namely, in order to be successful, I had to feel like I was working hard all the time. It had to

2:17.8

feel hard and it had to be a struggle that my life or my business would not improve unless I felt
