Normally on Thursdays, I'd like to do a little of Chad's church, but not today.

I want to give you a history lesson.

I think that's what we need today.

And maybe we can draw some moral lessons from it as well.

I've got the lights down today, a little mood. Those

you are listening by way of audio podcast. We're setting the mood here in the cave today because I want to, I'm going to take you back into a dark period of the world's history.

Hopefully you'll be both entertained and enlightened by it.

I mean, I could give you sort of a Paul Harvey's rest of the story, but I'm not that good.

So I am going to do a little storytelling with you today.

Years ago, when I was in college, that has got to be 30 years ago, I became a avid student, a voracious

reader, a voracious reader of history that's centered around the turn of the century.

As we headed into the 20th century, the attitude

and the philosophy of the day was that people were inherently good. Humanism had taken over.

And as one said, humanism, the problem with humanism is it had both feet firmly planted in midair.

There was no foundation for humanism.

There was no this idea post-Civil War in America, for instance, everybody thought they were getting better.

In fact, that was a trend in the day in the early 1900s was to look in the mirror.

It was actually a practice that was promoted to look in the mirror

every day and to say to your reflection every day and in every way, I'm getting better.
