Please be advised. In medieval times, times the German city of Uum would often play host to kings and

emperors during their travels.

The location of the city played a role in that.

It was located where two rivers joined the Danube,

and the beauty of the forests and mountains did not hurt its appeal.

The city stood in the path of some of the most important trade routes on the way to Italy,

and its geographical placement helped to make its citizens wealthy.

In 1377, the mayor of Uhm placed the first stone in the foundation of what was to become the Ume Minster,

a church that was financed solely by the citizens of Ullm and not the church itself.

However, none of those citizens would live to see its completion.

Construction was hampered by structural revisions and lack of funds. After trade routes move,

Ullm was no longer the financial powerhouse that it used to be and this caused decades long

hiatuses to occur. In 1890 the church was finally finished, and standing at 469 feet, it was and remains to this day,

the tallest church in the world.

The tower at the University of Texas at Austin

started its construction in 1934 and completed it just four years later.

Standing at 307 feet, it does not match the height or scale of the Omeminster Church.

But on August 1, 1966, the Tower proved tall enough for Charles Whitman to stand on the top observation deck and play God.
