Well, thank you, Dr. Gorker. Please give the lovely Katie our very best here from CBP. It is great to be with you and thanks for having me for those who don't know the backstory.

My wife's three plus years in the Trump administration at Department of Homeland Security and ended up as the press secretary at the CBP for a commissioner Morgan.

So we're delighted to have you on the show deputy commissioner Perez because we need to talk about everything that's still going on on the border.

What's happening with the war but first in this age of the Chinese coronavirus. How does COVID policy affect your work and the CBP's work on the border?

Well, I will tell you, Dr. Gorker, what we've been able to do by virtue of the direction provided to us by the health and human services department by the CDC really has averted what could have been arguably catastrophic by way of infection, by way of not being able to contain and or mitigate the spread of the virus.

So if I can backtrack a moment for you, Dr. Gorker, right at the very beginning as you and your listeners probably may recall, you know, the administration put in some very critically important to travel restrictions.

Those were soon followed up with some coordinated efforts with the Canadian and Mexican governments to put in further non-essential and essential restrictions on the cross border land movement here.

And the point that I'd like to share is the fact that look, Dr. Gorker, border security is national security as we say very often and frankly a big part of the entirety of that customs and border protection national security mission in addition to counterterrorism in addition to fighting drug smugglers in addition to arresting gangsters and alien smugglers is the fight against and protecting the country against infectious disease.

This is not the first time we've confronted challenges like this, which whether it was H1N1, whether it was Ebola in years past, obviously an unprecedented challenge with respect to COVID-19.
