Summary

Welcome to the September 2023 Ask Me Anything episode of Mindscape! These monthly excursions are funded by Patreon supporters (who are also the ones asking the questions). We take questions asked by Patreons, whittle them down to a more manageable number -- based primarily on whether I have anything interesting to say about them, not whether the questions themselves are good -- and sometimes group them together if they are about a similar topic. Enjoy!

Hello, everyone. Welcome to the September 2023 Ask Me Anything Edition of the Minescape

0:05.9

Podcast. I'm your host, Sean Carroll. We were approaching, it occurs to me, episode

0:11.0

250 of the Minescape Podcast. I just published 248 last week, and I'm not going to do anything

0:18.0

special for the 250th episode. It doesn't seem quite glorious enough to do it, but we have

0:22.8

approximately 50 episodes per year. So it reminds me that we just passed our fifth anniversary

0:30.1

at the beginning of July, and I didn't do anything as far as I remember. It was a hectic

0:34.4

time, the beginning of July. I was trying to get my book done, traveling a little bit, et cetera.

0:39.0

So I wanted to at least spread some thanks, some gratitude for everyone who's been listening,

0:44.7

all the new listeners too, but everyone who has enjoyed Minescape over the last five years.

0:49.8

That's a lot of episodes. It's not exactly 50 per year because the AMAs don't get numbered

0:55.0

things like that, but it's pretty impressive. I would not necessarily have bet five years ago

1:01.3

that we'd still be doing this now, certainly not every single week, but it's a lot of fun for

1:06.1

me to do. It's a little bit of work. I will not lie about that, but I think it's absolutely

1:11.0

worthwhile so far. I'm learning a lot. That's for sure. I'm hoping that other people are learning

1:16.6

something too. It's absolutely the case that part of my motivation for doing this is to

1:24.4

counteract some of the misinformation, some of the bad information that is out there.

1:30.2

I know that Minescape is not the most controversial or action-packed or even, you know,

1:39.0

G Wiz podcast out there, but there's a lot of cool ideas to talk to. I mean, just the fact that

1:46.4

I don't like to have the same guests on more than once. There's a huge number of guests that I've

1:52.4

had that would be great to have back, but there's also an even huge number of people I've not yet had

1:59.3

as guests. It would be easier for me to have guests on over and over again, no doubt about that,

2:04.6

but I never know when I'm going to discover something new and interesting, but just having someone
