Yesterday I was at the discount tire store in Texas City.

When I got there, there were more chairs than customers, so I sat down.

A woman came in so I stood to give her my chair.

She thanked me and it was obvious that the other men in the room saw this.

An elderly lady came in and not one of the three men sitting down offered her a seat.

A woman told her adolescent son to give up his seat and he promptly did.

I was stunned.

You know, simple things like that illustrate something more than the simple thing we think of.

Simple things like that reflect a view of humanity.

They seem simple, but they reflect something much deeper.

And when you lose that thing that is much deeper, it manifests itself by an able-bodied man sitting in a chair

while a pregnant woman or an elderly woman or any other woman walking in,

remains standing and he doesn't offer her a chair.

I'll tell you there's different values in different cultures.

And if you see a culture that doesn't get up for a woman at a moment like that,

it will tell you much more about that culture than just what they do when they're in a seat.
