Summary

It took too long, it took too long, it took too long -  for Aly & AJ to come on the pod!  What keeps a band together for 20 years? How do sisters turn harmonies into a creative language all their own? And what does it look like to balance joy, artistry, and activism while living life on the road? This week, JVN sits down with Aly & AJ to celebrate two decades of music-making and sisterhood—spanning from their early Cow Belles days to sold-out tours and their powerful anthem “Sirens.” - This conversation is all about creativity, resilience, and the rituals that keep them grounded. Plus, we get into their songwriting process, advocating for gun control, and debate over the best breakfast in America. And yes—we asked about Cow Belles 2 . First rising to fame in the mid-2000s with their platinum-selling debut album Into the Rush and hits like “Potential Breakup Song,” they became known for their sharp harmonies and heartfelt songwriting. After a period of acting, solo projects, and a hiatus from music, they reemerged with a more mature, indie-pop sound, earning critical acclaim for projects like a touch of the beat gets you up on your feet gets you out and then into the sun (2021), with love from (2023), and Silver Deliverer (2025). Blending nostalgia with modern edge, Aly & AJ continue to evolve as artists while staying true to their roots as sisters whose voices—and bond—create their signature sound. Senior Producer, Chris McClure Producer, Editor & Engineer is Nathanael McClure Production support from Anne Currie and Chad Hall Our theme music is also composed by Nathanael McClure. industry better. Honey, welcome Allie and A.J. How are you? We're so good. You guys, thanks for coming and getting better. Of course. Thank you for having us. Before we started, I just have to say, the hair and the glam today is slaying so hard for our viewers. Thank you. Can you tell us who is the glam team behind these looks? Ourself. You guys, I really respect and honor a diva who does their own glam. I obviously love a hair and makeup artist, too. I love a glam team. But you guys are just really giving me proficiency. I mean, thank you. Okay, let's talk more about you. Harmonizing. You guys are incredibly good at that. Thank you. And as someone who's been recently diagnosed with can't harmonize like Obia? It's a real thing. Yeah. Yeah. I have friends that I've tried to teach that too. Why can't I? How come I only hear melodies? That's a good question. Do you guys switch? Like to sometimes one of you melodies? Yes. do you get to change but i will say AJ is

2:02.4

exceptionally like locked into finding a harmony in a way that's very easy whereas i will prefer to

2:08.4

just stay then on melody but yes like i produce all of the harmonies like i always conduct like

2:13.4

i will say like 70% of the time you're the one that's harmonizing wouldn wouldn't you say? Yeah, I agree. And then 30% maybe it's me doing the harmony. Is there, oh my God, not me being like a musicologist right now. Watch out swiftologist. But would you say, is it like a range or something? Is there like a range that you prefer to harmonize in?

2:34.3

Or like, is there like a place where you're like, I get uncomfortable? Is that a good question? Is that a good

2:36.9

question? That is a good question. That is a good question. Do you like low harmonies or high harmonies? Yeah. Exactly. A low harmony or high harmony. I would rather do a, oh, that's a good question. Let me think. I'd rather do, I think, a low harmony.

2:51.9

Yeah.

2:52.6

Because you're like...

2:53.3

Okay.

2:53.9

That makes sense.

2:54.7

You usually take the low harmony. I feel like. I'm trying to think of like slow dancing. And I feel like you take a higher harmony. Yeah, you're right. Yeah. And then we also will do unison, but it will be a low octave. So it's the same melody, but it's just one octave lower or one octave higher. What's really annoying about me for that is that I always think that's a harmony, but it's an octave. Yes. And then my girlfriend's just like, no, that's just the same thing, but run out or run down. And I was like, we do that a lot actually. And I'm sure fans might think, again, that that's a harmony, but it's actually not.
