Who was Morris Bailey?

So, Morris Bailey was a young man who grew up in the town of Derby,

which is a town right in the middle of England, about as far from the sea as you can get.

He was a fairly lonely child, I think.

He was unwell as a child, had to spend a lot of time on his own in his bedroom.

And he grew up to be quite a kind of awkward, quite a lonely young man.

Sophie Elmerst is a writer and journalist.

In 1962, when Morris was in his late 20s, he lived alone in an apartment,

in the middle of the town where he'd grown up and worked

at a printing press. And he would spend his weekends trying to escape the city. He would go hiking,

he would fly these small planes, and he would sail when he could, but he didn't have a lot of money,

so sailing is an expensive hobby, so he couldn't do that very much. But he did a lot of these pursuits alone,

essentially. He wasn't a man of many friends. You know, he would go to the gym where he knew a

couple of people, but it was a fairly limited, straightened life, I guess. One day in the gym,

Morris met one of his acquaintances who said,

oh, you know what, I can't go to this car rally that I'm supposed to be doing on the weekend.
