This is rumble strip. I'm Erica Heilman and this is the sound of the beginning of a storm at my house which turned into a flood which happened on the one year anniversary of a hundred year flood that we had here in Vermont last year. It used to be it was easy to love thunderstorms in Vermont

because nothing bad really ever happened here. There was a terrible flood in 1927,

but that was a long time ago.

Anyway, since the flood, I have been making stories non-stop for Vermont public

about the town of Plainfield, which is right next door where I live.

It was hit really hard and a lot of people lost

their homes into the Great Brook which runs into the Winooski River. The day after

the flood the Brook Road was washed out and a lot of people were cut off.

The people who were working construction, rebuilding the road, were nice enough to let me go through their site and up to a section of road that was still intact.

And about a quarter mile up the road I met Allison who was staying with a

neighbor and here is what she said.

It was it started kind of early like I was told watch out we got a flash flood warning or whatever.

And I didn't really understand what a flash was, you know.

The home I was in, was there for 74 years without being hurt.

So I never expected the whole house to be taken away into the river and destroyed.
