Summary

This week Seth and Bill take on the unpleasant topic of Allied Prisoners of War held by the Japanese. The guys get into the weeds talking about the brutal treatment of Allied POWs at the hands of the Japanese, getting into the Burma-Thai Railway, Hell Ships, Japanese methods of torture, starvation, Ofuna, Omori and finally liberation. Louis Zamperini, Richard O'Kane, Greg Boyington, the USS Tang survivors are just a few of the POWs whose experiences the guys talk about. #wwii #wwiihistory #ww2 #usnavy #usa #usarmy #medalofhonor #enterprise #aircraft #aircraftcarrier #cv6 #midway #wwii #wwiihistory #ww2 #worldwar2 #usnavy #usnavyseals #usmc #usmarines #saipan #usa #usarmy #aircraft #aircraftcarrier #battleship #battleships #ussenterprise #aircraftcarriers #museum #essex #halsey #taskforce38 #wwii #wwiihistory #ww2 #usnavy #usa #usarmy #medalofhonor #enterprise #aircraft #aircraftcarrier #cv6 #midway #wwii #wwiihistory #ww2 #worldwar2 #usnavy #usnavyseals #usmc #usmarines #saipan #usa #usarmy #aircraft #aircraftcarrier #battleship #battleships #ussenterprise #aircraftcarriers #museum #hollywood #movie #movies #books #mastersoftheair #8thairforce #mightyeighth #100thbombgroup #bloodyhundredth #b17 #boeing #airforce wwii #wwiihistory #ww2 #usnavy #usa #usarmy #medalofhonor #enterprise #aircraft #aircraftcarrier #cv6 #midway #wwii #wwiihistory #ww2 #worldwar2 #usnavy #usnavyseals #usmc #usmarines #saipan #usa #usarmy #aircraft #aircraftcarrier #battleship #battleships #ussenterprise #aircraftcarriers #museum #hollywood #movie #movies #books #oldbreed #1stMarineDivision #thepacific #Peleliu #army #marines #marinecorps #worldwar2 #worldwar #worldwarii #leytegulf #battleofleytegulf #rodserling #twilightzone #liberation #blacksheep

Hello and welcome to episode 407 of the unauthorized history of the Pacific War podcast.

0:22.2

My name is Seth Parrott and the historian and deputy director of the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum here at Kim Shelby.

0:26.8

And with me, as always, is my good friend, Captain, retired captain, Bill Toaddy, former skipper of the fast attack submarine U.S.S. Indianapolis, Commonwealth, Commonwealth, Civil War, submarine squadron, three, and Pearl Harbor, and many other postings.

0:37.1

Bill, you see what happens if I go off track just one time. I stumble over my own. I can't remember who the hell you are. It's okay. I can't remember who I am either. I'll tell you, most of the time I feel really good. Today I'm feeling every one of my 67 years, Seth.

0:55.7

Hey, before we jump into it today, I do want to say something because we're going to continue in what I've jokingly,

1:04.7

that's not so funny though, referred to as our atrocities series of episodes today. And Seth will tell you what the topic is

1:14.7

in a moment. But these have been some pretty brutal conversations we've been having. They're

1:23.2

important to have them. And they're important not to filter or water them down. It's

1:30.3

important to know what the heck happened in World War II. And yet, YouTube is giving us troubles,

1:40.3

still giving us troubles. So it's still putting age restrictions. We try to use

1:45.3

alternate language, different words without watering down what it is what would actually

1:50.9

happened because the history is important, as we say all the time. If you don't learn from it,

1:57.6

it's just talk. But YouTube is likely to put an age restriction on today's

2:03.4

episode, too, Seth, I think, anyway. No, I agree. I agree with you. I'm sure they will,

2:09.7

and I'm sure this won't be the last one either. It's very disappointing and it's very troubling,

2:16.2

frankly. You know, we go out of our way to, and not just us.

2:19.9

I mean, I know there's other podcasts to do the same, but I'm speaking from our personal

2:23.1

experience here is we go to Great Lanes to tell the real story, you know, the accurate

2:30.5

story.

2:31.3

You know, we've made a few mistakes here and there, but by and large,

2:39.7

99.9% of what we say is accurate. And we say it in a way that people can digest and understand,

2:48.0

you know, as you always say, Bill, two guys talking in a bar. And apparently Google or YouTube or whatever doesn't like some of the things we've said. So they flagged it, which I think is both disgusting and sad, state of American history as it stands.
