So let's jump straight in.

Allergic rhinitis involves inflammation of the nasal mucosa, leading to symptoms like nasal congestion, a runny nose, itching and sneezing. It's predominantly IgE-mediated, making it a type 1 hypersensitivity reaction.

It's very common and it can significantly affect sleep, mood, hobbies, work and school performance,

and quality of life.

Allergic rhinitis may be seasonal, for example hay fever associated with pollen, perennial

meaning year round, for example house dust mite allergy, and occupational, for example

associated with the school or work environment.

Let's talk about the triggers.

Typical triggers include pollen from trees, grass or weeds, house dust mites,

pet dander, for example from cats and dogs, mold spores and wood dust.

Let's talk about the presentation.

Allergic rhinitis typically causes a runny, blocked and itchy nose, sneezing and itchy red and swollen eyes.

It's often associated with a personal or a family history of other atopic conditions,

such as asthma, exma and food allergies.

Diagnosis is usually made based on the history.

Skin prick testing or serum allergen-specific IgE testing on a blood test may be useful in supporting the diagnosis.
