Summary

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 197 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! By now hopefully you’ve dried your eyes since last week’s powerfully emotional CryFest, the Hardcore Listing takeover with the Top Five Songs That Make You Cry, and are now ready to take on your next episode of Distraction Pieces - and indeed this is a grand one… A two parter of sorts, wrapped into one tight package, as Pip is joined by film director Allen Hughes and music producer and entrepreneur Jimmy Iovine consecutively!

By now you may have seen the documentary packaged entitled ‘The Defiant Ones’ show up in your Netflix new arrivals - you peeped it yet? Well best believe you will be after listening to this… Directed by Allen Hughes (maybe you know him from Menace II Society but his filmography is VAST and amazing), it’s a four part (not four episode, as Hughes will tell you!) series documenting the beginnings of the Dre multiverse, Interscope Records, Beats, and all things legendary music producer Jimmy Iovine - we’ll get to him…! You know you’re in safe hands with Hughes, and it really is a glorious representation of a world that you will know parts of but certainly not the whole story… So with this episode of Distraction Pieces, you are treated to a half hour sit-down with the director himself, then swiftly followed by another half hour chat with the superstar behind the scenes Jimmy Iovine! Jimmy’s worked with a ridiculous list of people. Just ridiculous. I mean John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen and Dr Dre is a good start but when you start reading down the list, it is genuinely mind-blowing. So do that!! Add to that his record label action and the Beats By Dre element, and there you have a true business champ who was responsible for so much in not only rap music but rock and just an insane amount more… Ground gets covered, stories get told, philosophies and gems of knowledge get dropped - a pure treasure of goodness for your ears and your mind. TOO MUCH goodness. Check ‘The Defiant Ones’ on Netflix immediately if not soon!

I've got two great guests this week. Last week, in fact, this week's podcast was recorded

0:16.6

on the same day as last week's podcast. And last week's was particularly popular. We've had a lot

0:21.6

of feedback. We did top five songs that make you cry. We've christened Stu of the hardcore

0:28.2

listing podcast. If you haven't checked that out, go and check it out and then check out the

0:32.7

hardcore listing podcast. But yeah, it was a particularly popular one. And you've been

0:36.8

flooding out timelines with your top five songs that make you cry and with annoyance at the

0:43.6

fact that we were in tears throughout the podcast, put in a lot of you in tears. So sorry about that.

0:50.0

But this week's guests are amazing. It's Alan Hughes and Jimmy Irvine. And these are two of

0:55.9

the people I've been most excited to talk about. As a lot of you will know, I turned down a lot of

1:01.6

press junky type runs because you normally get five or ten minutes. And I normally need an hour.

1:08.7

But with this one, they put forward the idea to have half hour with each of these guys.

1:14.1

And they're their icons, man. The documentary that the client ones is on Netflix now. And it's

1:21.2

one of the best documentaries I've ever seen in my life. You'll hear in the first part, I've put them

1:26.4

all in this podcast, but it's two parts in one podcast. You'll hear, as I'm talking to Alan Hughes,

1:35.6

that I was blown away by the direction of the documentary, the way it was put together, the way

1:40.4

it looked, the way it sounded, the way it emoted all the stories told. So yeah, it was great.

1:47.6

And then in the next part, I talk to Jimmy Irvine, which is all again, you don't need to

1:52.2

download two things. I've put them all here together. In the next part was Jimmy Irvine. And if you

1:57.0

don't know, Jimmy, as you'll see in the documentary that the client ones on Netflix, Jimmy,

2:05.0

in unusual circumstances, ended up working on a John Lennon record. And then he worked on Bruce
