Summary

Friends, on Palm Sunday, the culminating point of Lent, the Church reads from one of the great Passion narratives from the synoptic Gospels. But I want to look at the second reading today—a passage from the second chapter of Paul’s Letter to the Philippians, the heart of which is a hymn or poem. These words go back to the very beginning of Christianity, and they serve as a beautiful summary statement of the faith. Paul is reflecting on the downward trajectory of the Son of God—all the way down into death itself, even death on a cross.

0:50.5	these passion narratives. What I wanted to do today this year is look at a text.
0:55.6	It's one of the most precious texts we have in the entire tradition. It's offered
0:59.9	as the second reading for Mass today and I think we don't focus upon this text
1:05.0	enough. I'm talking about this little passage from the second chapter of Paul
1:10.4	to the Philippians. I remember Paul had been evangelizing in today's Turkey,
1:16.8	Asia Minor and then he says through a dream he has the summons to come to
1:21.7	Macedonia to cross over into what's now Europe and begin to preach the gospel
1:28.4	there and one of the first places he comes is a little town of Philippi. It was an
1:33.0	important town for the Romans because a great battle had been fought there after
1:37.2	the death of Julius Caesar when Brutus and Cassius were conquered by Anthony
1:41.5	and Octavian. So it was an important city and one of the first places Paul
1:46.5	preaches in Europe and think that leads to the evangelization of the entire
