I'm your host, Vanessa Diaz.

This episode is airing on Friday, December 12th. And today I'm going to tell you about a handful of books that I am going to attempt to finally

0:43.9

get to at the end of this year. I think I probably do this at the same time of year,

0:49.4

every year, at least spiritually, which is to take stock of all the books that I've been meaning

0:53.7

to get to, not necessarily books that were published this year, just stuff that's been added to my TVR that I've been meaning to get to. And because December is when my professional reading obligations tend to slow down for at least a little bit, and I take a little bit of time off, I go and I consult, you know, that list and make what is frankly an aspirational list of

1:12.1

those. There's no way I will get even a little bit all the way through. But that's okay.

1:16.6

I usually end up getting through about four or five, as I think I mentioned on the last episode

1:20.9

of the main show. So anyway, you're going to hear a couple of the books that I mentioned on that

1:25.4

show, but in a little more detail, plus a handful of others

1:28.4

that I'm hoping I finally get to enjoy this sort of winter slowdown. But before we get into that,

1:34.3

let's hear for more sponsor. My first pick is Mona's Eyes by Thomas Schleser, translated by

1:40.4

Hildegard Searle. So, you know, we're book riot. We know books, right? I think we do.

1:46.0

But inevitably, every year at this time of year in particular, I see a book land on some big,

1:52.9

buzzy best of list or, you know, award winning list that I didn't get a ton of coverage on our

1:58.2

site and it's not intentional. It's just something that happens. Like, we read all the books. We definitely try as the name of this podcast would suggest. But there's just always going to be something that slips through there. And it's not a bad thing. It's actually kind of great when I get to discover something that I feel like I know very little about. It's a little treat. So again, this year, that book for me is Mona's Eyes, which was named Barnes and Noble's book of the year for 2025. It's about a young girl who very suddenly experiences an episode of blindness. And she sort of, you know, yells out and her mother comes running. And of course, they take her to the hospital. She comes, or this comes, I should say, out of kind of nowhere.
