This week I'm going to talk about nostalgia without talking about nostalgia.

I've been thinking a lot about an institution across America and the world, which has been

disappearing right before our eyes.

In the last few weeks, two malls local to me have shut down, including one that had a big going away

goodbye party where former mall employees came by to see it one last time before it shuttered forever.

I should say this episode is not entirely about the mall.

Yes, it's partly about the mall, but it's also about institutions of the 90s, an era which I know people my age those of us in

our late 30s and early 40s grew up during and have certain memories related to

and this is an era today's young people are nostalgic for their

dressing like they're from the 90s behaving and longing for the era's simplicity

much in the way those of us living through the 90s who actually like grew up in the 90s

did for the 60s and 70s. These errors of course have their own problems but that can't gomentioned, and it doesn't in either of these books.

But both of these books will scratch at two inches at once, first to Nisalgia,

and second, there are realistic looks at the 90s that both honor the quirks and the exciting

parts of it while being realistic that this decade was far from perfect. One of these books is adult
