For centuries, humankind has sailed the wild and windy seas in search of new lands and vast riches.

Swar these sailors battled pilfering pirates and deadly diseases. They bargained with Poseidon,

the god of the sea, to save them from storms and

sang songs to lure friendly mermaids from undersea caves. They swab decks, set sails,

and blew whistles as they went about their daily chores.

They even had their own unique language to communicate with one another, language that the

rest of us didn't understand.

Eventually the sailor's language made it ashore, like random, flotsam and

jetsam, and is still in use today. Now it's not uncommon to hear landlubbers, or folks on land

like you and me, using sailing terms in our everyday speech.

So let's jump in and see where these slogans take us.

A favorite sea saying is flotsam and jetsam.

Flotsam means something that floats after falling overboard,

and jetsam means something that is thrown or jettisoned overboard.

Basically this means random stuff floating around in the sea like plastic bottles, garbage and junk.

In the Disney movie The Little Mermaid, Ursula the Sea Witch, had two Moray Eel Minions named Flotsam and Jetsam.

These eel swam around spying on aerial and her friends, causing trouble wherever they went.

Eventually Flotsam and Jetsam were blasted to bits and became Flotsam and Jetsam, or sea junk themselves.

If you can't stand sea life like many, then you're a landlubber.

I don't know about you, but I get seasick and I'm totally fine being a
