and 29 FA Cup Finals, becoming a match of the day staple from 1971 onwards, leaving

Ball and correspondent John Murray has joined us as well. John, you're abiding memory of his work.

Well, hello Steve. Very often when we have this kind of chat, when a great figure of football

passes away, you know how it goes, but this one is different because I think for followers

of football of a certain age, and actually while I say that, I should add that his half-century

career with the BBC did end only in 2018, but for so many he was one of the football voices

of their childhoods, of their formative years, and their adult lives as well. But for me and my

colleagues who are football commentators, this is different because he was an influencer long

before influencers became a thing, you know, so I worked alongside him, rubbed shoulders with him,

and to be able to do that with what was one of the most recognisable voices there's ever been

in sports broadcasting really was a special thing to have been able to do. Ali, when you think of

the name John Motzen, what is the first thing that comes to mind? I think the obvious thing to say

there, Steve, and it's a slightly throwaway one, is the sheepskin coat, isn't it, the images of

Motie on the pitch side in the sheepskin coat, but we all know that was a gimmick and a

koochroma. I mean, I know I know he loved wearing it, but in all seriousness, the first thing I

thought about today was the voice, the actual kind of instrument of his trade, and that that seemed

a slightly obvious thing to say because we heard that voice so many times, whichever voice it had been,

you know, it would have become unmistakable and we don't know it, but I just think it was,
