Summary

Today, Rachel Reeves has announced a multi billion pound investment for transport projects across the country.

The money will be spent on tram, train and bus projects in mayoral authorities across the Midlands, the North and the West Country. But how different is this to money previously announced under the last Conservative government? Adam is joined by the Mayor of the North East of England Kim McGuinness.

Meanwhile, the Chancellor Rachel Reeves has confirmed more people will get the winter fuel payment this winter. Adam, Chris and Faisal discuss that, and more tariff turmoil.

Hello, Rachel Reeves, the Chancellor, did a speech today

0:07.0

where she spent lots of money on transport projects in various parts of England.

0:12.0

And this is kind of being perceived as the good news, air quotes,

0:15.7

before the air quotes bad news next week of the spending review,

0:18.4

where the decisions will be potentially a bit less popular.

0:21.7

But one thing that lots of people clocked from her speech was she did that classic politician

0:26.3

thing of doing it in front of a bunch of workers. In this case, it was a bus factory in Rochdale

0:32.0

and some of the workers didn't look super enthusiastic about being there. Although we haven't heard from them directly,

0:38.6

so we don't know what their emotions actually were. Anyway, newscaster Mark was clearly has got

0:43.2

this on his mind because he messaged us saying, I've noticed in recent years there's been a

0:46.9

tendency for UK politicians to have members of the public, primarily in a workplace, as a

0:51.4

backdrop when giving speeches. This relatively new phenomenon feels very much like the style used in US politics

0:57.0

and assumes that everyone in the background supports what the politician is saying.

1:01.0

So we'll let that observation hang there, but what we want from you is,

1:06.0

have you ever been one of the people in the background of a politician's speech. If you have, email us

1:12.5

newscast at BBC.co.uk. Or you can WhatsApp us on 0-330-123-9-480. And there are bonus points if you can

1:22.2

provide photographic or videographic evidence. So, raid your archives.

1:30.4

And also someone who's done that already, message to say,

1:34.1

me and the rest of my politics class were in the background of a speech in 2010 given by Nick Clegg and David Cameron when they came to our school.

1:37.2

And that isn't somebody who's been listening to this episode of newscast being recorded

1:41.2

and then emailed us in while listening.
