Summary

Dan and Nick break down the All-22 coaches film of the Giants’ offense in their Week 9 loss to the Raiders. They start by breaking into a discussion about the state of quarterback on the roster as it currently stands before getting into some film breakdowns, some big time opportunities for Jalin Hyatt that were missed due to insanely aggressive coverages from Patrick Graham that left space galore to the field side, and also some impressive run plays by the Giants while also breaking into large discussions on Andrew Thomas, Justin Pugh, Daniel Bellinger and more. Welcome back. It's the big blue banter. New York Giants football podcast. I'm Dan Schneier.

0:06.4

I joined as always my host, Nick Falado. Today we're here to break down the offensive, all 22 coaches film from the Giants Week 9 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. And we're going to go over some concepts first. Then we're going to get into some play breakdowns. I'll say this to start, Nick, it might be, you never know. The last time we see Daniel Jones start a game for the New York Football Giants, which is a crazy thing to think about, given where we're at. I think you said it best before this podcast, Nick. You're like, just think of how unique the circumstances are. The Giants had a quarterback. They drafted at sixth overall that a lot of people felt like had a second round grade on him, including us, we had a second round grade on Daniel Jones. They, you know, had four rough years. And then in the fifth year, they didn't pick up his option. And by the way, four rough years that he was injured in all of them. The fifth year, they didn't pick up his option. He put together the best season of his career, took the Giants to the playoffs.

They won a playoff game. They scored a lot of points in that playoff game. Obviously, it all collapsed the next week against the Eagles in the divisional round, but scored a lot of points, won a playoff game, and then decided to re-sign him to a big contract. And now nine weeks later, he tears his ACL, even before that there was discussions of this anyway.

But now this idea that maybe he's no longer the quarterback of the team. It's just crazy. Like, has that ever happened? I was like, oh, what about Brock Oswald? But the Oswalders scenario is not the same. They didn't go up and get him in the draft Osweiler. They didn't not pick up the fifth year option and then sign him.

1:24.7

Yeah, they wanted to get out of the contract eventually. And they, you know, they trade a draft picks just to trade him away to the, I believe it was Cleveland Browns at the time. They were playing money ball style there, their GM. But it's just so unprecedented that this decision and not decision, this, this circumstance that Giants are in right now at the quarterback position. And so we had that.

2:02.6

We had Tommy DeVito, who I thought, you know, I'll say this. I'm going to sit here right now and apologize to Tommy DeVito because I was a little harsh on him on last night's podcast on the reaction pod, Nick. And I will say this, my stance that he does not have an NFL caliber arm remains the same and didn't change based on the film.

2:07.8

I mean, I watched him hitch like 17 times into that deep ball that was underthrown intercepted by the quarterback.

2:09.9

I swear, it was like five hitches into that throw.

2:15.6

But he was much better on tape than he was on the broadcast angle in other areas.

2:18.4

He took some whole shots that I haven't seen the Giants take.

2:23.3

He threw the back, you know, the back pile on touchdown to Wano Robinson. I just haven't seen the Giants make in a while. The whole shots were to Bellinger and the Sladen will go over those.

2:28.0

They were good throws, good timing, good anticipation, I thought, and good decision making.

2:32.6

So I felt like the film was a little better. I wanted to start there with the quarterbacks. Then we'll move on to other topics before we get into the tape, Nick. Any thoughts on either of those two things, Jones or DeVito? Daniel Jones, it sucks, man, torn ACL. You know, I hope he can recover and get back. But yeah, I think it's safe to assume. Now, it doesn't mean that it is the case,

2:52.2

but if the Giants continue to suck and have a high pick, Daniel Jones, we might, you might not be

2:57.6

ready for week one if the Giants even don't draft the quarterback. So we're not certain. We're going to see Daniel Jones as a giant, but we still could hope the kid gets back healthy. And as for Tommy Davido he's tough he's fun you're right he doesn't have a big arm but he uh was recognizing

2:52.4

coverages i think he was Tommy DeVito, he's tough. He's fun. You're right.

3:08.4

He doesn't have a big arm.

3:08.0

But he was recognizing coverages, I think, early, late. Like it was, it was bad earlier in the game when he first got in. But then as the game progressed, coverages weren't as unique. But he was recognizing the concepts and he was taking advantage of them. And I think even in the game plan in general, giants weren't surprised by what Patrick Ram was running.

3:08.8

Right. They had concepts. I don't want like throws Mike Kafka and Brian Daibble under the bus. It's like no, the plays were there and the quarterbacks didn't execute on them. And that include Daniel Jones. That includes Tommy DeVito. Daniel Jones early before his injury, there were concepts where they were cover three beaters. They were as a hitched seams. They were slant flat where you're reading one defender and you're throwing based off that defender. And Daniel Jones just wasn't really finding the open receiver. And the Raiders, Patrick Graham, did the same exact thing that Jack Del Rio did. We talked about along this podcast, where to the field side, when the ball is on one hash,

4:00.2

to the wide side of the field, the cornerback, he would drop that cornerback off into a deep half

4:05.5

responsibility, meaning he's a too high safety in a cover two shell.

4:10.0

So that means the apex defender, the curl flat defender, has so much space to cover.
