Today we're reading from one of the eyewitness accounts of the death, the burial, and the resurrection of Jesus.

I love that. No one in any church today across the world celebrating Easter has to take some preachers word for it.

Today we are looking at eyewitness accounts of the death of Jesus.

The one that we're looking at today is his friend Matthew, who was one of the close followers of Jesus and who gives us this account of Jesus on the cross.

In the last hours of his life, this is what we find in Matthew chapter 27 beginning in verse 45.

Matthew records it from the sixth hour and to the ninth hour darkness came over all the land.

And about the ninth hour, that's about three o'clock in the afternoon.

Jesus cried out in a loud voice, Eloy, Eloy, Lama, Suboxone.

You're like, what happened? All of a sudden, that's Jesus language of his day. Jesus didn't speak English.

And so Jesus crying out in his language now, what translates into my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

And then some standing there heard this and they said, he's calling Elijah and immediately one of them ran and got a sponge and filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a stick and offered it to Jesus to drink.

And the rest said, now leave him alone. Let's see if Elijah comes to save him.

And when Jesus had cried out again, another gospel writer tells us this second cry was the phrase it is finished.

He cried out again. Jesus offered up or gave up his spirit.

And then in verse 51, at that moment, the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

The earth shook and the rocks split. The next section tells us that people came out of their graves when this happened in the vicinity of Jesus' death.

And then if you'll drop down to verse 54, when the Centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that it happened, they were terrified and they exclaimed, surely he was the son.

And then just speed up if you will to chapter 28.

Jesus has been buried. The tomb has been guarded. And now after the Sabbath, that dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.
