Throughout the 1950s, movie going and pop culture was drastically changing.

The birth of rock and roll music and the increase in driving movie theaters created a new

culture aimed at a new group, the American teenager.

Filmmakers and studios took notice of this and started tailoring their movies towards

this new demographic, creating fun, popcorn and midnight movies that were cheap and quick

to make and would play in double bills at driving movie theaters.

Film producer Jack Harris decided to make a movie that cashed in on the wave of alien

invasion films, but one that were tonally stand apart from the likes of War of the

This would be much more jovial, more fun, packed with colourful visuals and even a novelty

theme song, not to mention a hot new up and coming actor called Steve McQueen as the

young cool teen hero.

This flawed film, in many ways, became the quintessential 50s alien monster movie.

One that continues to have a cult following to this day would go on to inspire new young

up and coming horror filmmakers and would even spark a masterful cult classic of a remake
