After the relatively peaceful 90s, America once again found itself fearing attacks on their

soil from outside forces, and suddenly alien movies were becoming scary again.

In 2002, director M. Night Shyamalan made a classic alien invasion film, but told the story

from a personal intimate perspective, relying less on huge spectacle and more on nerve-shredding

suspense and terrifying jump scares.

A few years later, producer J.J. Abrams and director Matt Reeves managed to make one

of the definitive post-9-11 genre films of the decade with their New York set Found

Footage Horror movie about an alien invasion that evoked an all-too-familiar sense of panic,

fear and devastation.
