Summary

Our guest today is Alice Bentinck, co-founder of Entrepreneur First.EF (as it's more commonly known) celebrate their tenth year this week and co-founders Alice & Matt have gone from strength to strength - even fostering their first billion-dollar company in Tractable … which also happens to be the UK's 100th unicorn. But it has not been plain sailing - as you’ll hear today. There are many myths around entrepreneurship that I try to challenge on this podcast, one of which is that entrepreneurs are born not created. I believe it has never been easier to be an entrepreneur and is now a much more credible career choice than even 10 years ago … However, the number of tools and options available can also make it more difficult to know where to turn. EF looks to solve this by matching you up with a co-founder and learning the basics of entrepreneurship from some of the very best …and we are probably just at the beginning of their journey.A big thank you to all you listeners for powering us into the top 15 of Apple business podcasts ….If you are enjoying the series, it makes a massive difference if you could rate us on iTunes. The reason we do this podcast is to try and inspire people about the exciting jobs of

the future that entrepreneurs are creating, understand the future of our economy, and

0:43.3

allowing people to realise their potential. I didn't know what I was doing when we started

0:48.8

the podcast, and truth be told, I still don't know where it's going to end up either,

0:53.7

which is not a hugely dissimilar story, so today's guests. So it's wonderful to see the

reviews of the podcast by Charles Fletcher of Navigate Politics, and hearing from people

I even owe it, but has recently got a job, having been inspired by some of the guests

Our guest today is Alice from Entrepreneur First. EF, as it is more commonly known, is

1:23.9

10 years old this week. If you look at the stories of the co-founders, Alice and Matt, they

1:30.4

are both articulate, bright, tendered Oxbridge, went to work at McKinsey, and even have NBEs

1:37.8

to show for their efforts. They've also fostered their first billion-dollar company, Contractable,

1:44.2

which also happens to be the UK's 100th unicorn. But it has not all been plain sailing.

You'll hear today how they initially thought that they were going to be a charity, but

1:56.1

the charity commission ruled that out, and for the first two years, they didn't really

2:00.5

know the direction they were heading. They just had a simple idea that investing in people

was the way forward. There are, I believe, many myths around entrepreneurship, some of

which I try to challenge on this podcast. One of them is that entrepreneurs have a light
