At dawn, a stranger emerges from the woods at the base of the San Juan Mountains.

His feet are bound in rags, a patched woolen coat pulled around a bloated torso.

He trudges.

First, through half melted snow, then across a frozen lake, before a soft spot in the ice

gives way.

The figure clamps a pair of hands around his thigh, struggles, and rips himself free.

He presses onto the trailhead on the far side of the lake.

They make it.

He and the rifle, the steel coffee pot, and the satchel strapped to his person.

There's also a knife, the one on his belt, his safeguard.
