Summary

Alex North seems to be one of those rare writers. It looks like his debut, 'The Whisper Man', will actually be made into a film. The novel was a Sunday Times and New York Times Bestseller, and has been translated into 30 languages. The Movie will star Adam Scott, Robert de Niro, Michelle Monaghan and Michael Keaton.

He's also published 'The Shadow Friend', and 'The Half Burnt House'. His new novel is 'The Man Made of Smoke'. Here's the blurb -

Daniel Garvie was only a child himself when he saw the lost little boy. And because he was too frightened to help him, one of the world's most notorious serial killers got away. Years later, Dan has a successful career as a criminal psychiatrist, unpicking the reasons behind the very darkest of human behaviours. But when his father disappears, Dan is forced to return to the small island where he grew up. A place where all the ghosts and monsters he thought he'd left behind him remain all too real.

It might be a chance for him to find redemption. Or he might be walking straight into a trap.

Alex is also Steve Mosby. Steve has 10 published novels to his name, and won the prestigious CWA 'Dagger in the Library' award to celebrate his collection of works.

We talk about why he needs buzz around him to write, and how he tries to make it more enjoyable. You can take a look through his spreadsheet, columns, colour-codes and all. We chat through how he fits in writing around other things, and how odd it is to actually have your book turned into a movie.

Hello and welcome along to a brand new episode of writer's routine.

0:12.7

This week we're chatting to Alex North, Sunday Times, New York Times bestseller.

0:18.7

And as I talk to you now, I imagine Robert De Niro and Michael Keaton

0:22.8

are busy turning his debut The Whisper Man into a blockbuster movie. He's got a new one out. It's

0:29.2

called The Man Made of Smoke. You can hear about the routine of the day and of the year and how

0:34.9

he fits in his writing around all the other things. I was always been used to kind of fitting stuff in here and there just in short bursts, you know, because I'll be working nine to five in a proper job doing where I couldn't write most of the time. So it was always finding these little spaces where I could fit writing in. And I suppose that's kind of where it comes from, kind of what I do what I do now. It's like, well, I've got exactly the same amount of time to write as I used to. So I might as well have a bit of a life and enjoy myself at the same time. I don't think I would get any more work done by sitting and working 9 to 5. I think I would just be very, very bored. Also, now with a film about his stuff being made,

1:11.6

how what does it feel to have an idea to write it in local cafes around Leeds

1:16.6

and then know it's being turned into a movie half the world away?

1:19.6

This sounds so ungrateful and so stupid, but I kind of don't feel that much in a way.

1:25.6

It's funny what you say about the rarity of it. And I sold the option

1:31.4

for the Whisper Man in 2018, so seven years ago. And they've renewed it a couple of times since.

1:39.2

And there's been screenplays that have been sent to me that, you know, it's gradually developed.

1:43.3

But you kind of just think to yourself, well, and that's just not going to happen, you know, because they do this, they buy stuff and then stuff never gets made. You can only believe it when you eventually see it on the screen. So I kind of just, it's just been sort of pootling along in the background kind of thing without you thinking too much about it. You can hear loads more with Alex North in a brand new episode of writer's routine.
