road that came equipped with the Automaker's Pro Pilot Assist partial automation system.

I pulled out of a car rental parking lot onto the highway.

Nobody had taught me the basics about the system.

Nobody told me the car was even equipped with it.

I figured it out myself when I tried to turn on cruise control.

Once I started fiddling with

pro pilot assists I started wondering can I take my hands away from the wheel

am I using this right? Am I safer driving with it on or off?

Fast forward to this past week,

when Alex Mueller from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety,

who is my guest today, released new research

that tries to answer some of these questions.

I. I.H.S. survey drivers on how they're using and misusing partially automated driving systems.

They distilled how their habits differ by carmaker and how often drivers are diverting their attention to other things once they turn on partially automated systems like Tesla's autopilot, Cadillac Superc, and Nissan's Pro Pilot Assist.

Suffice to say the results are interesting.

The complexity around these systems is substantial,
