week. We have lots to get to today, but here's a historic fact. Here's something to impress

your friends or colleagues with today. Though I'm not sure how much we want to celebrate

this, but today, August 5th marks 161 years of income taxes in the US. It turns out President

Lincoln signed the first income tax law back in 1861. The Treasury was short. They had

to pay for the Civil War. And so he brought us the income tax at the time. It was a 3% tax.

If you made more than $800 a year, that's equivalent today, by the way, to $28,000.

So you have President Lincoln to thank for the first income tax. Okay, several headlines

we are watching as we head into the weekend. A couple of verdicts here and abroad that includes

Brittany Griner, who has been sentenced to nine years in a Russian penal colony. And

down here in Texas, a jury came back Thursday night. We'll tell you how much conspiracy theorist

Alex Jones has to pay Sandy Hook victims families. I found an interesting analysis on how

criminals are getting around gun laws. This is done by the Wall Street Journal. I will
