Alex Gibney is a very prolific documentarian, but this year was crazy even by his standards.

He was in the middle of making his two-part HBO series, Agents of Chaos, about Russian interference in U.S. politics,

when he dived into another film about the Trump administration's pandemic response.

And he was determined to have that one ready to go before the election.

It was insane, absolutely insane, for me to even consider it.

But, you know, I lost a friend to COVID.

Another friend of mine, you know, was on a ventilator for two weeks.

And I was just gobsmacked by the completely incompetent federal response to the pandemic.

And I just thought something needs to be done.
