Hello and welcome to I Know Dino, the Big Dinosaur podcast, where we cover news, interviews, and

0:27.2

discussions of all things Dinosaur. Hello and welcome to I Know Dino. I'm Garrett. And I'm

0:34.0

Sabrina. This week, we're back from our big dinosaur road trip, and we have our

0:39.8

first interview, which was with Jules Gough and George Jacob from the Philip J. Curry Dinosaur Museum.

0:46.4

We have some news that we're catching up on. And since that Philip J. Curry Dinosaur Museum is in

0:52.8

Alberta, our dinosaur of the day is Albertosaurus.

0:56.4

First, jumping into our news, last week we talked about some new evidence from the Antarctic,

1:02.7

that there was a sudden extinction event, likely caused by a meteorite or something like that.

1:09.4

And that was based on some mollusks that were found in Antarctica.

1:13.0

This week we've got another paper based on similar evidence from Antarctica by Sierra

1:18.6

Peterson and others who believe that the Deccan traps may have caused some extinctions as well.

1:25.4

Basically, the Deccan traps are a region in India that was formed from massive volcanism

1:30.3

that was going on right around the same time that the Chicksilube impactor hit Earth.

1:35.4

So there's always this debate of where the Deccan traps volcanism causing extinctions,

1:40.3

or was it the meteorite that made the Chicksilube crater?

1:43.4

Nobody really knows for sure.

1:44.9

So it's pretty hard to separate which event caused extinction or even if it was a combined

1:50.6

effect. Like we talked about that study where the meteorite may have caused more eruptions

1:56.7

from the deck and traps or something. There's all sorts of complicated possibilities.

2:01.0

So these researchers used a paleo thermometer, which we've talked about before,
