In service to something greater.

The Kali Gandaki River, Nepal, dust, dust everywhere.

In my eyes, in my ears, in my mouth, grit against my teeth.

Why do sacred journeys always involve hiking to a no-man's land, into arid, wind-swept

dust bowls, like the one I encountered at the foot of the Himalayas?

Our destination was Lomantang, a tiny village that is all that remains of the ancient

kingdom of Loh, in Mustang, northern Nepal, bordering Tibet and China.

This is a protected region, only accessible with special permission from the government

because of the precarious and complex relationship between Nepal and China.

To reach the village, one must walk or ride horses for 12 days over Himalayan passes.

Guru Rinpoche followed this same route in the 8th century when he walked from India

to Tibet, defeating demons and sorcerers as he traveled, to bring Buddhism to a frontier

land.
