It's May the 16th, 1999. Mount Denali, Alaska. 20,000 feet. A dark veil of cloud in Gulf's North America's highest summit. A swirling snowstorm shrouds the upper slopes. Vicious 70 mile per hour gusts roar across the mountain.

On an exposed snow-covered plateau, three British climbers are caught in the storm's freezing grip.

Two of them, Nigel Vardy and Anthony Hollinshead, wield axes.

They are desperately chipping away at a narrow crack in the ice trying to widen it.

Their friend, an expedition leader, Steve Ball, stands behind them, swaying unsteadily, shaking violently.
