It is Thursday, April 3rd. It's one of the questions I get a lot. What's the difference between an agent and a manager?

Both represent Hollywood talent, actors, directors, creators. Legally speaking, talent agencies are

regulated by the state and empowered to negotiate deals, managers. They guide careers. Tell clients

which direction to go, manage their lives, sometimes help them develop projects and even produce with them.

Agents can't do that.

I used to be able to make the analogy to entourage.

Agents are REE, managers are E.

I should also disclose that my wife is a manager and that puck is represented by an agency, WME, but they don't represent me personally.

Increasingly, people in town can't always tell

the difference between an agent and a manager. CAA, the largest talent agency, they're in litigation

with some defectors that started a company called Range Media, calls itself a management company,

but at least CAA says that's a sham and it's really an agency. At the same time, management companies are doing what the agencies did a decade ago.

They've been raising money from private equity firms like Carlisle and TPG to fuel their growth.

The exact strategy that the majors, talent agencies have employed for years now.
