Desire was in jail.

She described the conditions in her book. An orange jumpsuit, a dirty mattress on the cold floor.

And then there was Cat with her in the same cell.

She wouldn't stop talking to Desire, going on and on about what they needed to say and do to get out of jail.

Desire could barely focus on her own thoughts.

She had struggled to sleep, and it showed.

The reality of her situation seemed to be finally sinking in.

My worst fear became true.

I felt so ashamed.

By the way, her words are spoken by an actor.

Desire had been told she was in jail because of an expired visa,

but she knew there were going to be a lot more questions.

What if they charge her with prostitution?

Would she be sent to prison for a long time? The next day, an officer came to tell her they were being transferred to a state prison nearby, in Maine.

Desire sat next to Kat as the officer drove them.

Kat spoke to her in Portuguese, repeating how important it was to stick to the same story,
