Only no one recognized it as abuse.

Instead, it was labeled an affair, and Mariah was ostracized by her church.

restoring the church. I'm Julie Roy's. And this is part two of a two-part podcast with Mariah's

mothers and her husband, Jack's, Mothers. In part one, Mariah told of what she believes was grooming

and abused by her former pastor, Patrick Garcia. And if you haven't heard

part one, I encourage you to go back and listen to that now. It's a harrowing and cautionary tale

about how adult clergy sexual abuse happens. And I wish more Christians understood this

phenomena because it's a widespread problem wreaking havoc in the church. But so often,

it goes undetected, and the victims, instead of receiving help, receive condemnation. And the

predators often get replatformed only to continue their predatory ways. So again, if you haven't

heard part one, I encourage you to do that now. But in this podcast,

Mariah and Jack describe what is often called the second wound. This was the response of their

church to Mariah's adult clergy sexual abuse, and the shame and the rejection that Mariah

experienced was absolutely devastating. But you'll also hear how after a year of

extreme pain and brokenness, Mariah heard an earlier podcast that we did on the Roy's report

with another victim of adult clergy sexual abuse. And hearing that podcast and recognizing that it

wasn't an affair, but abuse, led to a ton of healing.

But it also prompted Jack and Mariah to confront the leaders at their former church, Hills Church, in Evansville, Indiana, for how they handled Mariah's abuse.
