This week's guest is writer, speaker, and whole drummer, Patty Shemmel.

So Patty was in hell.

She's also been in a lot of other great bands.

And her memoir hits so hard is about addiction, loss, recovery, and drums.

Patty and I spend a lot of time just talking about punk rock in this episode, what it brings

to us what we had, what we've lost, and what's still there in that scene.

We talk about how music has shaped our personalities.

We also talk about the sense of isolation being a queer kid in the punk communities that we grew up in, and talk about what drumming has done for Patty, and especially in relation to the contours of addiction,

of which she has had many, and she writes about

in her really amazing book, Hits So Hard, which I recommend to anybody who is interested

in that sort of time of grunge with Courtney Love and Kirk Cobain, but also who's interested

in finding out more about addiction and also just getting

a really profound and moving emotional narrative about it. Petty's a great writer. She's also
