Friends, what you're hearing behind me is the water of Brandon Creek rushing down into the sea.

Brandon Creek is on the Dingle Peninsula in Ireland, and where that creek meets the sea, there is on either side of it a small cliff.

So two small cliffs in this little inlet.

And this is where St. Brendan, the late fifth into sixth century Irish saint,

began his seven-year-long voyage in a tiny boat from Ireland to

North America. That voyage is filled with signs and wonders and miracles, strange encounters

with talking birds, with the devil, with a whale that lets them sleep on his back and more.

I'm using my encounters with St. Brendan and that voyage to explore the topic of

white magic with you across these next two episodes.

White magic is something that is really ill-defined.

It's something that usually just comes up as a counter to black magic.

Even when people say it, they don't really seem to know what it means.

You've probably noticed that there's this re-emergence of magic and the spiritual and all tachutraman like tower cards and horoscopes into popular culture, but also even political

and economic discussions.

As that's happening, there's not a lot of discussion about what white magic is

and what it might mean to engage with that as we go forward as magic and spirituality

becomes more and more and more available and present to us.

So that's why I'm exploring it across these episodes.
