So, I asked the brilliant Sophie Lewis, a family abolitionist, and author of the challenging and fascinating book,

Full Surrogacy Now, Feminism Against Family,

to talk about all of these issues and more.

Sophie's the perfect person to talk to about this, actually.

You know, we're in a time when families and homes are in the news constantly and privileged

in a certain way.

We're expected to stay at home as if that is a safe

place equally for everybody. We privilege the family. So here in Ireland, families can go out in the

park or on walks together. But a lot of us have chosen our families. In fact, that's been a staple

message of the LGBT movement in past

years and echoed by one of the guests on this show, Pansy Bliss, who talks about not having

our biological family, but having our logical families. So what do we mean by family and why

is there just this one notion of family and safety

at home, which is a place that for many people, again, including queer people or people with

abusive partners and so on and so forth, is not a safe place. Sophie and I have overlapping mentors intellectually, and in my case, my real-life mentor teacher,

Lynn Margulies, who was an inspiration to Sophie's intellectual mentor, Donna Harroway.
